Day 27 of 100 Days of Blogging

So, I'm reading this book that I found out about in the blogging world. It's called unchristian - what a new generation really thinks about Christianity...and why it matters. It's written by David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons. It is based on research by the Barna Group and looks at the revelation by sixteen- to twenty-nine-year-olds that Christians have taken several giant steps backward in one of their most important assignments.

In one of the chapters, they list seven elements that should define a Christ follower.
*worshiping God intimately and passionately
*engaging in spiritual friendships with other believers
*pursuing faith in the context of family
*embracing intentional forms of spiritual growth
*serving others
*investing time and resources in spiritual pursuits
*having faith-based conversations with outsiders

So, I'm interested in hearing from yall.
~Do you agree that these seven elements define a Christ follower?
~Are there other elements you would add?
~Are there any of these elements that you would remove from the list?
~What does being a Christ follower mean to you?

Looking forward to some great discussion!

Day 26 of 100 Days of Blogging

Damaris and I participated in the 40 Acres Neighborhood Fun Run this morning. She and I actually walked the 5K. I am so proud of her because most of the other kids her age (she's 8) walked or biked the one mile part. She walked 3.1 miles (plus the distance from our house to the start line and back home from the finish line - so probably 4 miles total). Way to go Damaris!!!

Day 25 of 100 Days of Blogging

Woo-Hoo! 25 days down, only 75 to go!

I know some of yall saw these videos yesterday when I twittered about them, but for those who missed out, here we go. Damaris and the rest of the kids from Friendship House spent the last month learning a dance from the HSU Spurs. They performed it yesterday. I think Take 3 is the best on of all. Hope you enjoy!

Day 23 of 100 Days of Blogging

Found this quiz while reading through some old posts on PinkHairedGirl (Crystal)'s blog yesterday. The results don't surprise me. I struggle though with the fact that my love languages are not Russ' and sometimes I think I'm fulfilling his need for love by doing what I would appreciate when it's not what he appreciates.

The Five Love Languages

My primary love language is probably
Receiving Gifts
with a secondary love language being
Acts of Service.

Complete set of results

Receiving Gifts:
12
Acts of Service:
7
Quality Time:
5
Words of Affirmation:
4
Physical Touch:
2

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often
due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we
don't understand our partner's requirements, or even our own. We all
have a "love tank" that needs to be filled in order for us to express
love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be
filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to
others.

Take the quiz

Day 22 of 100 Days of Blogging

HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Russ is wearing a green "Green Lantern" shirt today. I asked him what Green Lantern had to do with Earth Day and he said that the Green Lantern has saved the Earth before.

Damaris is wearing a shirt that says, "Save the Earth, There Are No Princesses On The Moon".

My shirt (yes, that is me in pigtails) is made of recycled Coke bottles and says, "Drink, Recycle, Repeat".

So, go save the Earth today! You know you want too!

Day 21 of 100 Days of Blogging

Thanks for the insight on grace. I'd love to hear more comments on this as it is something that God just keeps bringing up in my life, so He must be trying to teach me something.

On to today's blog entry - on one of my e-mail groups, the following question was posed and I'd love to hear your answers. Mine is below.

If money and time were NO object, where would you take your family on vacation this summer?

My answer -
Fly out of Lubbock, TX, to somewhere on the West Coast to take a cruise up to Alaska.

Then fly to Florida and get on another cruise ship that would take us to the Bahamas and then all the way up to Prince Edward Island.

Then we would return to Florida where we would then do the whole Disneyworld type stuff.

LOL! I sure can dream can't I?????
That's not me by the by. :)

Day 20 of 100 Days of Blogging

So, I've made it 1/5th of the way through this 100 days of blogging. I'm surprised that I'm still able to come up with things to blog about.

Anyway, as I twittered about after we got out of church this morning, grace keeps coming up in my daily life. Today it was in the story of Stephen in Acts 6 and 7. The verse that caught my attention was Acts 6:8 which says, "Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people."

We briefly discussed during the "sermon" (for those who don't know, the service we attend is very conversation oriented and we talk back and forth with our pastor while he talks) what grace looks like. But I'd love to hear from others. So, the question to comment on today is,

What does grace look like to you? How would you define or describe a person who is full of grace?

Day 19 of 100 Days of Blogging

Thanks for the insight on the names from day 17. I tried the link that Lori left, but my number didn't come up with anything. So, I decided on names though.

phone
For my beautiful pink cell phone, she shall henceforth be known as Rory
rory

laptop
For my funky laptop, she shall henceforth be known as Sookie.
sookie

suv
And our maroon SUV, he shall henceforth be known as Luke.

Now on to some fun for today, Damaris is enjoying the beautiful summer-like weather (85* for a high and it's 83* right now as I post this).

Day 18 of 100 Days of Blogging

So sad that I didn't have more of a response to my entry yesterday. I'd still love some input if you care to go back and post a comment.

On to today's post. I have to share about my fabulous CVS shopping trip. You see, my friend Christine got me started with CVS' extra care bucks program. I usually go in at least once a week to get some of the deals. Here is a picture of today's shopping trip:

Here's a breakdown of what I got:
*12 pack of Diet Dr. Pepper - $3.34
*2 Essence of Beauty Lip Balms - $2.49 each - $4.98
*8 bags of M&M's - $3.29 each (Buy 1, Get 1 Free) - $13.16
*2 bags of Mint Crisp M&M's - $3.29 each (Buy 1, Get 1 Free) - $3.29
*Essence of Beauty Gift Bag - $1.49
Minus $4.50 in Extra Care Bucks
Minus $19.95 in Extra Care Bucks
Out of Pocket Cost - $1.96
Received Back - $23.00 in Extra Care Bucks ($3 for the Dr. Pepper; $5 for the Essence of Beauty products; and $15 for the M&M's) making the M&M's only $1.45 for 10 bags; making the Dr. Pepper only $0.34; and costing me $1.47 for the Essence of Beauty products (I would have bought 3 gift bags and made money on them if I could have, but there was only one gift bag left)
So I actually made $21.04 on the deal. Woo-Hoo!

This is me happy about my deals (and you'll notice that my face looks much better than my post earlier this week):

Day 17 of 100 Days of Blogging

First, I want to say thank you to everyone who is praying for me right now about the migraine/Bell's Palsy stuff. I'm feeling a bit better this morning, but still not up to par. Please continue to lift me up in your prayers! Thanks!

Second, my blog entry for today involves some participation from whoever is reading this. So, if you read this, please comment. LOL!

So, are you one of those people who give names to inanimate objects? You know what I mean. Like the person who has a Ford Mustang named Sally. LOL! So, (I just realized that I use the word so alot!), anyway, I've been thinking of the 3 most important inanimate objects in my life. I'm sure you know what they are. My laptop, my cell phone, and our SUV. No surprises there, right?

Well, I've decided since these three items are so important in my life, that they need names. So, (there that word is again!) I need help with names. Here are pictures of the afore mentioned important objects so you can get a good view of them since that might help with the naming process.

First up, my beautiful new (to me) Palm Treo 700p (and you shouldn't be surprised that it has a pink case) -

Second up, my lovely laptop (it wasn't girly enough, so I had to add stickers to it) :) -

And last, but not least, is our 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe (it's maroon in color and of course has Gilmore Girls bumper stickers on the back window) -

So there we go, I'm open to suggestions for names for these three beautiful objects. Put on your thinking caps and comment away. LOL!

Not a pretty picture :( Please pray for me. I'm in severe pain right now and I still have to keep on keeping on because my plate is so full right now.

Day 15 of 100 Days of Blogging

grace...

I'll admit it. I was in a pissy mood this morning. Felt taken advantage of and twittered that. I have a migraine which isn't helping matters any.

Headed into the other room to shower and get dressed for the day. Then God spoke...Grace. Grace! C.C., do you hear me, I said Grace!

For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us GRACE and glory. The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. Psalm 84:11

But now we have been given a brief moment of GRACE, for the Lord our God has allowed a few of us to survive as a remnant. He has given us security in this holy place. Our God has brightened our eyes and granted us some relief from our slavery. Ezra 9:8

My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with GRACE and be a chain of honor around your neck. Proverbs 1:8-9

As Paul and Barnabas left the synagogue that day, the people begged them to speak about these things again the next week. Many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, and the two men urged them to continue to rely on the GRACE of God. Acts 13:42-43

We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved GRACE of the Lord Jesus. Acts 15:11

But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful GRACE and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. Romans 5:15

Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s GRACE. Romans 6:14

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you GRACE and peace. 1 Corinthians 1:3

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you GRACE and peace. Galatians 1:3

Dear brothers and sisters, may the GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen. Galatians 6:18

May the GRACE of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Philippians 4:23

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find GRACE to help us when we need it most. Hebrews 4:16

GRACE, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love. 2 John 1:3

May the GRACE of the Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people. Revelation 22:21

So, grace...grace...grace...

Any thoughts?

Day 14 of 100 Days of Blogging

Anyone who knows me at all knows what a HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!! Gilmore Girls fan I am. In that vein, I thought I'd share a couple of my favorite Gilmore Girls video clips set to music thingies with yall.

This first one really showcases the relationship between Lorelai and Luke.

This second one focuses on the relationship between Lorelai and Rory.

This third one starts by showing Lorelai's failed relationships and then goes to when Lorelai denied her feelings for Luke before they finally got together.

Anyone else in tears like me? I miss Lorelai and Luke and Rory and well, all of them, so much! I'm still holding out hope for the movie that ASP has mentioned to tie up all the lose ends.

Day 13 of 100 Days of Blogging

What a blessing it was to worship today! Our service this morning was about community utilizing the passage in Acts 2. Our worship leader Kirk introduced to a new song this morning by Blue Tree called "God of This City." He shared the story behind the song which made it all the more awesome. Here are the lyrics:
You're the God of this city,
You're the King of these people,
You're the Lord of this nation
You are
You're the light in this darkness,
You're the hope to the hopeless,
You're the peace to the restless
You are

For there is no one like our God
There is no one like You, God

Greater things have yet to come,
Greater things have still to be done in this city

You're the Lord of creation, the Creator of all things,
You're the King above all kings, You are
You're the strength in the weakness,
You're the love to the broken,
You're the joy in the sadness,
You are

With outstretched hands and hearts alive
We've praise for You and love for You
In this city

If you go to Blue Tree's Myspace page, you can listen to this song - http://www.myspace.com/bluetreeonline

Then, this evening was such an awesome experience. Our church, Crosspoint Fellowship is still a baby church, just having been in existence for about 5 years. However, we celebrated a huge milestone for us tonight when we ordained our Teaching/College Pastor Meredith Stone. This was the first ordination service for our church and yes, we did ordain a woman! It was so wonderful to listen to Meredith's story and see where God has brought her. I can so relate to part of her journey as a woman who was raised in the Baptist tradition where in most situations, women are not in ministry positions. I'm so thankful for a church that recognizes that God can and does call women to serve Him and that Damaris is being raised in a church that is an example for her of what God can do in all of our lives! Praising Him for such a blessed day!

Day 12 of 100 Days of Blogging

Happy Saturday! Spent the morning babysitting for a friend from seminary - his wife is in the hospital because of severe dehydration (she is pregnant) plus they already have a 15 month old. So, the 15 month old was here with Damaris and I this morning while dad was checking in on mom. We watched a couple of Winnie the Pooh movies with the baby which was fun.

Laid down for a nap after lunch and set my alarm to get up and the alarm never went off. Consequently, we were about half an hour late to the neighborhood block party. Oh well, we weren't the only late ones. We had yummy brisket and smoked sausage plus all the fixings and cobbler for dessert. They had a bounce castle for the kids to play in. I did a bit of knitting while we sat around talking to friends.

hula hoopDamaris brought a hula hoop over and I showed her that I've still got it, if having it includes being able to hula hoop around your arm and with your feet. LOL! It was fun.

Now settling in to watch some tv with Russ and do some more knitting. I'm on square #8 for the afghan for church. Have a great weekend yall!

Day 11 of 100 Days of Blogging

I posted the link to the blog of Todd & Angie Smith and their precious daughter Audrey Caroline who was born on Monday and passed on after only living 2.5 hours. Angie wrote a beautiful letter to her daughter and posted it today. I just wanted to share the rest of the story with yall: http://audreycaroline.blogspot.com/2008/04/letter-to-my-daughter.html I rejoice that Audrey is in Heaven with our Lord, but my heart is broken for this family who is grieving the loss of their daughter. Cherish each moment! You just never know what will happen in the next moment.

Day 10 of 100 Days of Blogging

So, yeah, I'm totally just feeling like I could punch a hole in a wall right now. It's been a really crappy day!!! REALLY CRAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But enough about my really crappy day, here are some things that brightened my REALLY CRAPPY day! (Did I mention I'm having a really crappy day??????)

Brightener #1 - My friend Jaci who I go to seminary with and also attend church with suggested that we make an afghan out of knitted and crocheted squares for our Conversation Room (aka the doughnut and coffee room) at church. We looked at several patterns and finally found one called the Psychedelic Squares Afghan. With a title like that, we just had to do it. So here is a picture of the two squares I've knitted so far (of course they are brown and pink - pink is my FAVORITEST color ever and I <3 how brown and pink look together - I'll do some other colors too as we're just using up yarn that we have on hand to make our squares).

Brightener #2 - This YouTube video made me laugh so hard I almost peed my pants. Check it out! It's hysterical!

Brightener #3 - I had a YUMMY!!! blended vanilla caramel latte from my favorite coffeeshop Monk's.

OK, back to my super crappy day now!

Day 9 of 100 Days of Blogging

http://pro.corbis.com/images/42-16384852.jpg?size=572&uid=%7B091191C8-CB6B-4C37-9353-2AEC67302242%7D

I think that we should have a mandatory nap time. I mean, it was required as preschoolers. Why all of a sudden when we reach grade school age is sleep no longer a good thing? Don't you think that we would get so much more accomplished if we all just took an hour long nap after lunch every day? Hmm, I wonder what I could do to get this made a law. MANDATORY NAPTIME FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Day 8 of 100 Days of Blogging

So my friend Rebekah asked a question on Twitter this morning that I thought I would blog on. The question is:
What does your ideal small group look like?

Well, for me, small group says community. Not just a group you see once a week and then have nothing to do with for 7 more days. Like, for example, our current small group which consists of 4 families (we had 5, but one couple is now in Korea teaching English - Hey Daniel & Chazley) - Russ & I with Damaris, 2 families with 3 kids each, and a husband/wife couple.

Prior to yesterday, we hadn't met in two weeks because of Spring Break and such. So, I sent out an e-mail to everyone last week so that we could figure out dinner for last night (we rotate who brings what and have dinner weekly) and what we were looking at studying together next since we had finished our previous study. The ensuing flood of e-mails (27 total!) ended up with us at the local coffeeshop eating Chinese food and hysterically laughing over a very inside joke that has been running for months now. Never before have I felt this type of community. I know that all I would have to do is pick up the phone or shoot out an e-mail and any of those in our group would be there at a moment's notice if we needed them. This is more than a Bible study and dinner group. This is true community for us.

So I don't know if I answered Rebekah's question and I know that not every small group is going to be like the one we're in now, but we're so thankful for where God has us and the people He has brought into our lives. Hmm, where have I heard this before? Possibly here? "All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer." (Acts 2:42)

Day 7 of 100 Days of Blogging

I've been pondering for awhile getting a tattoo. That might surprise some of you, but others, it will not. LOL! I tend to do some crazy things. Anyway, I've known for awhile that I want something tattooed on the inside of my wrist. The struggle has been figuring out what! I've finally narrowed it down to either the word faith or the word grace. I'm leaning more towards grace. I've looked at both words in several different font faces trying to decide how I want it to look. I'd love your input on a few different things.

First, what font do you like the best?
Second, should I get this tattoo on my right wrist or my left wrist (I'm right handed if that makes any difference and I also do not wear a watch)?
Third, should I get the word tattooed where it is facing me when I look at my wrist or so that it's facing out where others can read it?

Thanks for any insight you might be willing to provide.

Day 6 of 100 Days of Blogging

So we're grocery shopping today and I see these in the dairy section:
eggland

In case you can't read the packaging, the bag contains Eggland's Best Eggs Hard-Cooked & Peeled. That's right, already cooked and peeled hard boiled eggs.

How crazy is that? Or actually, how crazy does it make me for buying them? LOL! I had a coupon, that's a great excuse, right? :)

Saturday, April 5, 2008

Day 5 of 100 Days of Blogging

I'M IN LOVE!!!!!!! With my new cell phone that is. My Palm Treo 700p arrived this morning and I've been playing with instead of writing papers like I should be doing. I think I've got it mostly figured out. It's taken some time to enter in my contacts (only part of which I've entered, I'll enter the rest either as a break from writing papers or after I actually finish writing the papers). My one question or debate that I'm having is regarding e-mail. I'm pondering whether I should move all my e-mail into my cell phone or if I should just set it up to be able to send e-mails when necessary and continue utilizing my laptop for e-mail. At this point, I'm around my laptop most of the time. However, next year when (yes I'm saying when and thinking positive) I do my clinical residency, I won't be around my laptop as much, so that probably will necessitate a move of my e-mail completely to my cell phone. So should I take the plunge now or wait? What do yall think? OK, I've really got to get to these papers now. Have a great weekend!

Day 4 of 100 Days of Blogging

Yes, I have completely and totally lost my mind. OK, to catch up those who don't know, I am currently a Master of Divinity student at Logsdon Seminary in Abilene, Texas (Logsdon is part of Hardin-Simmons University). I swore I wasn't ever going back to school, yet here I am. I have struggled with what my place in ministry is for quite some time and about 6 months ago, God gave me my answer. I am to be a hospital chaplain. So, I have put in my application at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock, Texas, to do my clinical residency in the Clinical Pastoral Education program. This is a year-long residency, which if I get accepted, will begin in August, 2009 (the program tends to fill up about a year in advance, thus the reason I've applied so early). I will be doing my interview with them sometime in June.

Anyway, now that I've spilled all that out, my goal is complete all my coursework for my M.Div. prior to beginning my residency (which will then provide my final 6 hours of my degree and I will graduate with my M.Div. in 2010). So, my insane brain for some reason thought that I had completed more hours than I actually have. I met with my adviser yesterday to register for classes and this is the outcome.
May, 2008 (all day long for a week class) - a Christian ethics course called Money, Sex, and Power
Summer 1, 2008 (all day long one day a week for 5 weeks) - New Testament course in the Synoptic Gospels
Summer 2, 2008 (all day long for a week class) - New Testament course in John
Fall, 2008 - Old Testament Exegesis course; New Testament course in the Gospels and Acts; Spiritual Formation course; and Advanced Systematic Theology I (for a total of 11 hours)
Spring, 2009 - Christian History; Baptist Heritage and Thought; Pastoral Ministry: Principles and Practices; Evangelism; and Capstone Seminar (for a total of 12 hours)
Summer, 2009 - 6 hours of electives
August, 2009 to August, 2010 - CPE Clinical Residency which will count for Supervision in Ministry I & II (6 hours of coursework)

I told my adviser yesterday that I was just going to move into the seminary for the next year! YIKES!

Day 2 of 100 Days of Blogging

Day 1 of 100 Days of Blogging

We made it home from Waco late last night (after 10pm). The Women in Ministry conference that we attended was wonderful! We heard 4 phenomenal women preachers all preach on the same Scripture verse. It was very neat to hear each of their approaches to it. We also attended a networking lunch, 2 breakout conferences, and listened to a 5 woman panel of ministers, as well as an Old Testament scholar, a New Testament scholar, and a current male pastor discuss the biblical approach of women in ministry. This should be the last trip out of town for a bit, which is nice so we can get back to a normal schedule of stuff. Now I need to focus on school stuff as I have two major papers plus several other smaller things due in the next month. Have a blessed day yall!
